Filipino Writing System

“Filipino Writing System; A Creative and Effective Scheme for Filipino Literary Output
(A Reaction Paper on the Article “Towards the Standardization of the Filipino Writing System: Spelling Rules and Guidelines on the Use of the Eight New Letters of the Filipino Alphabet”)

            “…Filipino Alphabet will not sacrifice its simplicity and corresponding effectiveness as tool for reading, as it achieves flexibility…”

            On the 21st day of July in the year 2006, a certain article was posted in the internet with such title, “Towards the Standardization of the Filipino Writing System: Spelling Rules and Guidelines on the Use of the Eight New Letters of the Filipino Alphabet.” This article aimed to present the points for standardization, objectives, background, conceptual framework, process, and the designing of the Filipino writing system. The said revision and studied focused on the fact that states; “kulang ang kasapatan ng tuntunin para mapapasok ang karaniwang terminong ginagamit sa pagfilipino natin, pasalita o pasulat.” Thus, the work began through the effort of some government linguistic agencies, mandated organizations, grammarians, linguists, and other individuals and groups who really worked hard in the use of the alphabets and most especially the use of the eight new letters of the Filipino Alphabet. The background and statement of objectives were clearly defined;
      “It is acknowledged that lack of a standardized spelling system has caused confusion for most users of Filipino in the process of writing and reading the language…This problem has serious implications in showing down the process of reducing the language to its written form. It has restricted the development of written works as literature of Filipino which reflects the culture and traditions of the people as well as expressions of our noblest thoughts and aspirations…” (Article I).
            In my own personal assessment, I believe that the Filipino language had already proved itself as a very meaningful language that is being used in the producing written texts or output. I believe that we must always give the credit to those people who worked for the standardization of such matter. In this case, I believe that as users of the standardized system must always see to it that they are using it properly or in the right manner. Secondly, I believe that we must not stop developing and enhancing our alphabets to the full extent of its usage. We must never be a mediocre in finding out the realities of language and for its linguistic principles.
            In the case of the eight new letters, we must always take it into consideration of the proper usage of each letters---its combinations and products with the other basic letters. We must also put it into the accounts the facts stated in its standardization. “A standardized writing system also reduces dialectical variants into acceptable norms. A wider community of speakers adopts these norms, thus the dissemination and promotion of a lingua franca” (Course Notes).
            In the end, I say that as one Filipino nation, we are very lucky that we have our own standardized writing system that will create a basic difference to other foreign writing system. Without these letters or alphabets we were not be able to formulate our own words that come from our ideas, thoughts and perceptions. Without the standardization of such orthography we will not be able attain linguistic competence and evidently we shall have a collapse in language. Thus, we must put such works in application so that it will not be diminished in the atmosphere of literary works.  Filipino Alphabet will not sacrifice its simplicity and corresponding effectiveness as tool for reading, as it achieves flexibility”
