What is Love (Part XII)

Love simply measures up to every beautiful and unique description man has ever written about it…
To answer this I'll start off with one of my favorite quotes,
"Love is everything it's cracked up to be. That's why people are so cynical about it...It really is worth fighting for, risking everything for. And the trouble is, if you don't risk everything, you risk even more." (Jong, 1997, P. 5)
Not to reiterate anything that this quote is already stating, but it's completely true. Love is worth every step of the journey to get there. All the frustrations and heartaches it took to get there seem so small in comparison to the joy you feel now.
What is love?
Love measures up to every beautiful and unique description man has ever written about it and even manages to redefine itself with each new person that finds it. The part of love that most people misunderstand is that not everything turns to roses just because you've found it. It's true as the expression goes, love gives you wings, but you still have to work to take flight... and to keep flying don't you?
The majority of people forget this when they find love. They are so quick to forget all the heartache and disappointments before they fell in love that they expect there will never be any others. But being in love doesn't mean we become
superhuman nor does it mean we become perfect. It's loving someone for who they are, flaws included. Loving them when they first wake up in the morning, when they don't look their best, when they say things they don't mean it's loving no matter what, unconditionally. It's being able to look at someone and not care about the mistakes they made in the past.... it's about seeing that person for who they really are, who you are with them and who you both are together.
The quote isn't just talking about the journey to find love, it's talking about the journey we face while being in love - the journey we face together with the person who has taken hold of our heart.
Real love weakens you, and the loss of it cripples you. At times love dances on that thin line between love and hate. You love this person so much yet you hate how weak it has made you. You've opened your heart to love and it is exposed and vulnerable to every little pin prick now. Yet you go on leaving it opens because you trust the person holding it.
I often indulge that if something were to happen to me I would at least leave some part of me behind, but in all honesty, being loved by the one that I loved is enough for me. I can't say this is some great legacy but it would be mine to him.
